REBOOT. Pioneering Digital Art
Nieuwe Instituut

_when_scrolling_becomes_scrying (2023) is a desktop film that was exhibited at the REBOOT: Pioneering Digital Art exhibition at Het Nieuwe Instituut (7 October 2023 – 12 May 2024). The exhibition was a collaboration between LI-MA and Het Nieuwe Instituut. For this exhibition, 20 artists were asked to re-interpret canonical digital artworks.  Janilda Bartolomeu was invited to re-imagine the_living by Debra Solomon. The film has been acquired by LI-MA and is now part of their collection.

_when_scrolling_becomes_scrying, is a reflection on the idea of  ‘the Internet as graveyard’ and how the dead will soon outnumber the living Internet users. The project’s initial spark were old unread messages Bartolomeu discovered on her abandoned Facebook page. These messages were sent by her then recently deceased and estranged father. In this desktop film Bartolomeu reflects upon her own digital identities and what will remain of them after her own passing as well.   The grief of this turning point become a conduit to critically question her own, as well as her father’s remains carelessly strewn across the Web.  Our digital remains will likely continue to churn and work in various algorithms, long after we have passed. Does this condition constitute an act of desecration?
